What is Therapy?

Counselling is the process of assisting and guiding clients, especially by a trained person on a professional basis, to resolve especially personal, social, or psychological problems and difficulties.

Psychotherapeutic counselling is talking therapy. It is used to treat emotional problems and mental health issues. What distinguishes psychotherapeutic counselling from traditional counselling is the emphasis it places on the in-depth therapeutic relationship jointly created by the therapist and the client. This relationship is a central factor.

Why might I want therapy?

There are many reasons people seek out therapy. Grief, anxiety, depression, trauma, addiction, and relationships are some of the most common. You may simply want someone to talk to in confidence. Some problems in your life may feel tolerable whereas others feel overwhelming and unmanageable. Regardless of the intensity, severity, and frequency of your problem, no issue is too small or too big to benefit from therapy.

Are my sessions confidential?

Yes, your sessions are confidential. Confidentiality is vitally important. We do not disclose anything you discuss with us to a third party unless your safety, the safety of another person or the safety of a child is at risk. In rare cases, our counsellors are legally and ethically bound to break confidentiality. For more information please contact your counsellor, and consider our privacy policy.

Are online sessions secure?

Yes. Our counsellors use Zoom for online sessions. Zoom encryption fully complies with HIPAA Security Standards to ensure the security and privacy of your sessions. Your counsellor will always use a secure wifi network and sessions are not recorded to ensure your privacy and confidentiality.

What is your cancellation policy?

Our cancellation policy is 48-hours. If you arrive or call more than 15 minutes late for your appointment, without any prior contact or notice, this is considered as a non-refundable cancellation. No show appointments are also chargeable. We realise that life can take over and emergencies can happen. If you do need to cancel an appointment at short notice we will take this into account when rescheduling your next appointment.

How many sessions do I need?

We offer short term and long term one to one online counselling. Short term is 6 to 12 sessions. This will be agreed with your counsellor in advance. If you wish to work long term after agreeing short term sessions, this can be discussed with your counsellor.

Can I change therapists?

If you don’t feel you made the right choice after your first session, you can choose a different therapist for your next session. If it doesn’t work out with one therapist, then of course we encourage you to find one that feels right. However, we do discourage constantly changing therapist as it won’t help you move forward on your therapeutic journey.

Can I contact my therapist in-between sessions?

For rescheduling sessions please use our online booking system or contact info@listenuptherapy.com Any other contact between you and your therapist between sessions is discouraged. If you feel you are in a vulnerable situation and need help fast, please call the emergency services or contact www.samaritans.org or telephone them on 116 123 (UK).

Do you offer low cost therapy?

We have a limited number of low cost sessions available. You can apply for these through our enquiry form. Low cost sessions are only for short term counselling and dependant on availability with each counsellor.

What is Meditation?

Meditation techniques prepare us to slow down, relax and become more aware all at the same time. This is sometimes referred to as tuning into the meditation bandwidth – the place where you access that sweet spot of your being and meditation just flows. Meditation allows us to get to the space behind our thoughts and emotions and access a deeper awareness within us. It’s about connecting to our core essence. When we don’t feel connected to this, we often feel like there’s something missing in life for us.

What benefits are there from meditation?

Meditation allows us to relax, be more aware of ourselves, connect to source/life force/universal energy in a more intimate way. It can allow us to slow down and see things from a different perspective. It can increase creativity and energy flow, and allow us to connect at a deeper level with ourselves and others.

How do I know if meditation is right for me?

Like many things in life often we don’t know about something until we really try it. There are many different styles of meditation. What we share are tools on how to create space from thoughts, how to increase your window of tolerance through mindfulness, and how to go deeper than that to connect to your core awareness. What we share is not one ‘style’ of meditation, but carefully selected techniques that we think go well together in creating a simple yet effective meditation. You can read through the course outlines for more information to see if the course resonates.

Do I need therapy and meditation?

We offer both meditation and psychotherapeutic counselling at Listen Up Therapy Ltd. There is no obligation to use both of these practices. Your meditation classes and courses are not a replacement for therapy. Therapy sessions are not going to teach you meditation. Our experience has shown us that both of these practices can be extremely complementary to each other, however it is your choice whether you decide to use both practices.

Are there risks?

Meditation is about creating a relationship with ourselves on a deeper level. Often in the deeper relaxed states our bodymind may release repressed memories or emotions which is part of the bodymind ‘digesting’ things we didn’t have time to process. This is normal and healthy, but it can be the case that something surfaces that you may want the support of a therapist to help you move through it.

How long is the meditation course?

The meditation course is 6weeks long. There are 7 sessions, but one is introductory so you can do the first 2 sessions together, and then progress with one session per week. You can access the course for longer, so you can go at a slower pace if necessary and also revisit it anytime.

Can I get one to one meditation teaching?

Yes. If you’d prefer to work with someone, one to one, about finding a bespoke meditation practice or to have the chance to be able to ask questions and work through blocks and difficulties you have, we do offer this.

What if meditation isn’t for me?

That’s fine. You don’t have to be involved in the meditation offerings. You can have counselling on its own. Both of these practices are stand alone offerings, but we are offering them in parallel by choice to every individual. Our counsellors are not teaching meditation and the meditation courses are not a replacement for counselling.
